What kind of car insurance do I need?

It’s not always easy choosing the right car insurance to meet your needs and we want to help you make the right choice.
Whether you’re a first time driver or more seasoned, everyone needs liability insurance. Luckily, SafeAuto has specialized in helping drivers meet those requirements for over 20 years with affordable car insurance. Liability insurance protects you against the claims of other drivers for their injuries (bodily injury) or vehicle damage (property damage) if you cause an accident. How much protection depends on the level of liability protection you want to have. Most states require drivers to have liability insurance up to certain minimum limits.
If you're having trouble making a decision, feel free to contact our 24/7 customer support and a friendly SafeAuto team member will help you get the right coverage for your individual needs.

When do you need a SR-22?

SR-22 insurance or an SR-22, is a certification provided by your insurance company that proves you are carrying the minimum liability coverage required by your state. If you have been involved in an accident and did not have the minimum required car insurance, most state DMVs will require you to hold an SR-22. The SR-22 certification can be required for a DUI if you have multiple traffic violations.
SafeAuto makes it easy for you to request an SR-22 during the quote process so you can focus on getting back to the open road.

How much insurance coverage does my state require?

The first step to getting car insurance is knowing what your state requires and every state sets their own requirements for minimum car insurance coverage. Since some requirements differ significantly state-to-state, it is important to know what kind of car insurance you need. We make it easy with our state requirements page. Pick your state and you’ll find exactly what you need to know to make your decision.

What is the difference between collision and comprehensive car insurance?

With all the different terms used to describe insurance, it can be tricky to know how you are covered. Collision car insurance and comprehensive car insurance are like two sides of the same coin. Each protects you in a different way.

Collision car insurance helps cover the cost of repairs if your vehicle is involved in a collision. In the event that you are involved in an accident, your collision coverage picks up the tab after you meet your deductible (you choose your desired deductible during SafeAuto’s quote process). The lower the deductible, the less you pay out of pocket if you are involved in a collision. While collision insurance may not be mandated by your state, many lenders and leaseholders require this coverage to protect their interest in the vehicle.

Comprehensive insurance covers “everything else”. This includes a collision with an animal, natural disasters (i.e. floods, tornadoes, hail), theft/vandalism, and fire. Another reason you may want to consider comprehensive car insurance is if you are leasing your vehicle or purchased it using a loan. Like collision insurance, comprehensive insurance may not be required by your state. Lenders and leaseholders may also require comprehensive coverage to protect their interest in the vehicle just like collision coverage.
